Most people aren’t very confident when they smile. They either smile very self consciously, or they try to cover their mouth with their hands. Why do they do that? Probably because they feel they don’t have impressive teeth or their teeth look yellowish. Over the years, stains and discoloration can cause the teeth to look yellowish. Brushing and flossing can make your teeth brighter, but teeth whitening on a regular basis can really bring back that sparkle to your smile.
Teeth change color over the years, and a good percentage of this discoloration depends on what kind of food and beverages you ingest. Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco are just a few of the most common causes for yellowing teeth. They cause stain and discoloration and eventually, your teeth would look yellow and unimpressive. Age can also be a reason for teeth to lose their natural color. The enamel (hard, outer shell of your teeth) has an inner layer known as dentin. Over the years, the enamel gets thinner, and you get to see the yellowish dentin. This is why your teeth become yellowish as you get older.
Trauma or injury to the mouth can also cause teeth to lose their natural color. Teeth have their own protective measure – they lay out more dentin on the inner layer, making your teeth even darker. Certain medications can also cause teeth to change color, so it is not always what you eat and drink.
Our teeth whitening procedure doesn’t harm the teeth at all, we just work straight through the enamel. With a teeth whitening treatment, you can change your life a lot. You don’t have to compromise your lifestyle, but you can take some precautionary measures suggested by our dentists to keep your teeth whiter and cleaner.
Talk to our dentists, go through the different teeth whitening options and decide on which would be best for you. Sometimes, you would just need a single clinic visit to make the stains go away, and at other times, you might have to come in a few times to put the shine back on. Each visit might take around 30-90 minutes depending on the severity of the stains. Different kinds of stains need different kinds of treatment. If the staining is not that bad, the dentist would suggest a good whitening toothpaste, and tips on how to clean your teeth so it looks whiter.
